One of the artisan businesses that can generate huge income potential is home made perfumes.
Creating a custom designer fragrance to specification for each customer is a market with untapped potential that extends far beyond microbrews or wineries.
In addition if a fragrance has greater market appeal it can be sold as a stand alone product or a recipe.
I wear specific fragrances and I know the ones I like are extremely hard to find. I order mine from Italy and I only wear it on very special occasions as this favorite fragrance is no longer widely available or popular here. I have toyed with the idea of making my own perfume many times just so I could wear it more often. Everyone remembers my favorite because it is distinct, recognizable and beloved, why only a few designers use it I have no idea.
I have also tried to find favorite perfumes from the past to no avail, those that I loved but are no longer available. Women love their favorite scents and will go to great lengths to have them re-created.
Below is a free recipe for making your own perfume from Mountain Aromatics.
Packaging is very important when selling home based products like perfumes. I have done package design in the past for several types of products and each market is very different so knowing your target audience is crucial. Even in small boutiques you are likely to be among an array of similar products so you will want to study your shelf space competitors and ensure your product stands out. In some cases though you don’t want to be wildly different as to confuse the buyer about what your product is. Color is also extremely important. In general perfume packaging offers a lot of flexibility, more than food or other types of packaging. Fortunately, almost no color is out of bounds when it comes to perfume package design as the bases are floral or other natural elements. Whether designing for men or women or an offering for both perfume package design can be as simple or as ornate as you desire and it offers great flexibility for emotional appeal.
Here I used some elements from my latest collection Dark Pink Rose Garden and began to design a package for perfume. I imagined a custom product and just gave it a number instead of a name.
Not Just For Women
Market potential is huge in artisan perfume crafting. Don’t forget kids or teens as they also like to choose their own scents and many like fruits or other fun flavor additions.
Perfume No. 29
My collections always have a variety of elements to use and I could spend days or weeks designing from them but I didn’t spend a lot of time on this. Less than one hour (it could use some layout refining) but this is just a basic idea to show the enormous flexibility with just a few elements in one design. I could’ve come up with 20 varieties and combinations from one collection in a short time. Most all are black but with Photoshop they can easily be changed in layer styles. They can be embossed or given an inner shadow similar to the styles shown below from White Garden Floral Design Collection.
In this instance I just chose two roses and 4 elements to create with and chose to keep things elegant and antique as I often do with these antique collections.
I added a sepia gradient to the background elements and reduced opacity to 30% but I wanted my text to remain strong so I kept it black.
This could also be created as a label and with a laser printer the quality would be excellent.
It could also be created as a wrap and a round label could be used as a seal. This would offer a very high end look at lower cost. All done in paper, eco friendly. For small perfume samples, a pillow box. Even home artisans require package options for different price points.
All collections are designed to offer flexibility and cohesiveness so the creator can experiment with each element. All templates have labeled layers if a PSD file so that each layer offers a lot of flexibility too. Designs included are often just examples of what is possible with minimum layout guides. In some collections text effects are included as smart objects and in that instance it is just a simple click to change the text and a quick save to update the design. If a creator isn’t comfortable with designing but would like a custom product those services are available here, either as templates or finished print ready products. Some collections also have flattened images if InDesign or Photoshop is not an option and text only can be added on a jpg. file. All are high resolution.
If you are or know a perfume creator who would like design collections like these thank you for sharing. If this sounds like a great business opportunity for you I hope you enjoy the free recipe to get started learning about making your own perfumes. Much like micro brews, boutique artisan perfumeries offer much potential and who knows maybe one of your fragrances might become a best seller. Good package design is a main objective to making that happen.
